Image optimization is key to a fast loading website. I recommend the Resizing App for CHROME. It lets you resize and optimize the quality of the image and save it in multiple formats. For best results I set the width at 1300px and leave the default Optimize setting and output as a .jpg or .webp file.

note: you can also crop the image before you save it.
